Join us on an exhilarating journey where you will go from designing and building your own payload to launching it into space on board of a sounding rocket or a long-duration high altitude balloon!
You will develop your own space mission as part of a team to participate in the Cubes in Space Program. You will be guided step-by-step by experts to create a high-quality proposal, ideate a scientific experiment, develop your own space mission and build the hardware within the imposed requirements.
Your training will include circuits, electronics, programming, systems engineering, project management, mission development, testing protocols, engineering design, journaling, design reviews, etc. No previous experience is required.
The program will include on-site visits from the Mobile Earth + Space Observatory (MESO) to deliver relevant content on planetary science, astrophysics, instrumentation, optics, etc. MESO is a "science center on wheels" that focuses on hands-on learning, so you will get to interact with the exhibits and passionate scientist-educators.
We expect that you will actively participate in hands-on and training activities, sometimes individually and sometimes as a group. You are expected to work within a diverse team whose members have various levels of experience and range in age from 11 to 18 years old. We also expect that you show initiative, but are also willing to be mentored. Furthermore, you are expected to learn, grow, and have fun!
Sessions will be held on Fridays from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Drop off starts at 8:15 am and pick up ends at 3:45 pm. There is on-site parking available if you are driving yourself.
Students will bring their own lunch. Snacks will be provided. There is a small kitchen on-site with microwave to heat food. Lunch time is from 12:00 to 12:30 pm.
Students will sign in themselves every day to track attendance. Absences should be reported by parents. Early dismissal should be requested by parents as well.
Space Academy HSE Program will follow Lewis-Palmer School District 38 (D38) regarding snow days and delayed start. Although our venue, the Black Forest Community Church, is located within the boundaries of Academy District 20 (D20), we believe the weather in Black Forest is more closely aligned with the weather in Monument, CO, served by D38. Weather-related closures and delays will be communicated via email and posted in the website.
Space Academy Homeschool Enrichment Program is State-funded, which means, it is free for families. However, the State of Colorado dictates that students may only be enrolled in one publicly funded program at a time. If you choose our program, you cannot be enrolled in any other publicly funded program in Colorado.
There is a materials fee of $350 for the 2025-2026 Academic Year.
Students can attend summer classes and rocket/balloon launches at their own expense. These activities are not part of the State-funded program.
